A Note From Our Founder

Dear Future Client,

After more than a decade working in accounting, I started Spar with one goal: to give GTA families and small businesses the kind of personal attention that big firms reserve for their biggest clients.

As an immigrant who built my life and career here in Canada, I know what it means to work hard and to need someone in your corner. That's what my team and I try to be for every client — not just accountants, but partners who actually pick up the phone and remember your name.

If that sounds like what you're looking for, I'd love to chat.

Warmly,

Maryam Akhavan Safa

When is the deadline for filing personal tax returns?

Personal tax returns (T1) are due April 30th for most Canadians. Self-employed individuals have until June 15th to file, but any taxes owed are still due April 30th. We recommend filing early to avoid the rush.

What documents do I need to file my taxes?

You'll need T4 slips from employers, T5 slips for investment income, RRSP contribution receipts, charitable donation receipts, medical expense receipts, and any other income or deduction documentation. We'll provide a comprehensive checklist.

Can you help if I haven't filed taxes in several years?

Yes, we specialize in helping clients catch up on unfiled returns. We'll work with you to gather documentation, file outstanding returns, and negotiate with CRA to minimize penalties and interest.

When do I need to register for GST/HST?

You must register for GST/HST when your total taxable revenues exceed $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or over the last four consecutive calendar quarters. Some businesses choose to register voluntarily even if below this threshold to claim input tax credits.

How often should my books be updated?

We recommend updating your books at least weekly for most small businesses. However, frequency depends on transaction volume. High-volume businesses may need daily updates, while some can manage with bi-weekly or monthly updates.

Should I incorporate federally or provincially?

Provincial incorporation is simpler and less expensive if you only operate in Ontario. Federal incorporation offers name protection across Canada and is better if you plan to expand nationally. We'll advise based on your business plans.
